Washington, DC, August 11, 2022 – Privacy for America, a coalition of trade associations and companies representing a broad cross-section of the American economy, voiced significant concern about the impact that proposed FTC regulations would have on the American economy while reiterating its commitment to working with Congress to enact comprehensive preemptive national data privacy legislation that benefits consumers and works for businesses.
“It is interesting that the Commission is proceeding with such an overly broad and radical proposal so soon after a Supreme Court decision that appears to significantly limit their ability to do so and as Congress actively debates comprehensive data privacy legislation. If ever there was an issue that implicated the ‘major questions doctrine,’ it is the role of data which has driven innovation, growth, and competition in the American economy” said Stu Ingis, counsel for the Privacy for America coalition.
“Privacy is unquestionably an important American value. But innovation, technological advancement, free speech, capitalism, and opportunity are also cherished American values. How to balance these values is best determined through deliberative debate in Congress,” Ingis said.
