The passage of the Colorado Data Privacy Act this week demonstrates the urgent need for a uniform national data privacy law. Joining different laws in California and Virginia, this legislation only serves to create uneven and confusing privacy protections for consumers, while creating competing compliance requirements and imposing significant new costs on businesses still trying to recover from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Congress needs to act now to pass a strong federal privacy law that provides clear, broad-based privacy rules for the entire U.S. marketplace and ensures consumers are protected, no matter where they live. We stand ready to work with Congress to advance legislation and help build the consensus necessary to enact a federal data privacy law.
