Privacy for America shares President Biden’s goal of enacting comprehensive national data privacy legislation and enhancing protections for kids and teens online. It is important for such legislation to distinguish between harmful practices that should be prohibited and responsible data practices like advertising that provide valuable information to consumers and are essential to innovation and economic growth. Our organization has been actively working to enact a strong preemptive national privacy law but such legislation must be carefully tailored to preserve beneficial data uses while preventing misuse by bad actors.
Privacy for America continues to urge Congress to enact meaningful privacy legislation that enhances privacy protections for all Americans while preserving the countless societal benefits made possible by the advertising-supported internet. The coalition’s framework would address several of concerns cited by the President by prohibiting the use of personal data for stalking or certain discrimination, prohibiting companies from obtaining sensitive information without express consent, and by adding robust safeguards for kids and teens that go beyond current federal law. We stand ready to work with the President and Congress to enact a federal data privacy law that accomplishes both objectives.
