Washington, DC, June 6, 2022 – Privacy for America, a coalition of leading trade associations and companies representing a broad cross-section of the American economy, welcomes the ongoing work of the leadership of key Congressional committees to reach consensus on a federal data privacy bill that can earn bipartisan support. We remain committed to the enactment of comprehensive legislation that enhances privacy protections for all Americans, while preserving the many benefits that accompany responsible data use. The draft released Friday unfortunately falls short in terms of protecting responsible data use.
Of paramount importance, any new law must preserve the responsible use of data that has expanded the availability of news and other engaging online content, helped small and medium sized businesses reach new customers, fueled the creation of millions of jobs, and delivered myriad benefits to consumers. Federal privacy legislation must not undermine key drivers of the United States economy and their ability to continue to innovate at this precarious time.
Privacy for America remains committed to working with members of both parties to make a comprehensive data privacy law a reality in the United States. We look forward to working with the relevant Committees and all members of Congress to share our concerns about the current draft with the goal of improving it and enacting it into law.
